How does the deductible (“franchise”) work?

The deductible is the amount you choose to pay out of pocket before medical insurance pays. The deductible you choose will change the cost of your medical insurance. The deductible or “franchise” in Switzerland will vary under the LAMal compulsory health insurance plan. It will range from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500 according to your choice, and plans will be priced accordingly. Policy holders will be required to contribute up to a maximum of CHF 700 annually in addition to the deductible. If you choose a lower deductible, your insurance will cost more and you will pay less out of pocket for medical expenses. Higher deductibles mean lower insurance payments and higher out of pocket medical expenses. If you anticipate more than CHF 1,500 in annual medical expenses, are not employed or self employed then it’s advisable to choose a lower deductible.
