Accident Plans – LAA or LAMal

Accidents covered by the LAA are better covered than accidents covered by the LAMal.

Accidents are covered differently according to the individual policyholder’s personal situation. People who are employed by a company (more than 8 hours per week) will be covered for accidents under their company policy. Those who are not employed or are self-employed will be covered by their LAMal healthcare plan for an additional fee.

Accident insurance is structured like health insurance. There is the equivalent LAMal compulsory coverage and the optional complementary coverage. It is fundamental to ask your HR department for a copy of your accident insurance policy. Be sure to take advantage of private  care and all the benefits that go with it in case of an accident. This can be added to any policy for as little as 15 CHF per month for women and 20 CHF per month for men.

For those not covered by their employer it is not advised to take a deductible higher than 1500 CHF for the obligatory LAMal sickness (and accident) coverage

Important: Always have your accident insurance emergency phone number on you to use in case of injury in an accident. Companies expect all accidents to be declared within 24-48 hours or as soon as possible after the accident. This is a legal obligation and in your interest as accidents covered by the LAA are better covered than accidents covered by the LAMal.
